Strategic Shift at Gigafactory Texas
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to wind down production of the company's futuristic Cybertruck at its Gigafactory Texas facility around the middle of 2027, marking a significant shift in the electric vehicle manufacturer's production strategy.
In a statement shared on X on Friday, November 6, Musk explained that the decision would create additional manufacturing space for increased production of Tesla's autonomous Cybercab vehicles.
"Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production," Musk stated.
The announcement signals a major transition for Tesla as the company increasingly prioritises artificial intelligence, autonomous transportation, and robotics.
Reallocating Manufacturing Capacity for Cybercab
The decision to reduce Cybertruck production comes as Tesla accelerates its ambitions in autonomous mobility.
The Cybercab, a two-seater electric vehicle designed specifically for self-driving transportation, represents a central component of Musk's long-term vision of transforming Tesla from a traditional electric vehicle manufacturer into an artificial intelligence and robotics company.
By reallocating manufacturing capacity at Gigafactory Texas, Tesla intends to accommodate increased production of the autonomous vehicle. The Cybertruck is currently manufactured exclusively at the Texas facility, making the planned production wind-down particularly significant for the model's future.
However, Tesla has not provided a detailed explanation of whether Cybertruck manufacturing will be transferred to another facility or discontinued entirely.
Commercial Challenges and Declining Sales
Introduced in 2019, the Cybertruck attracted worldwide attention because of its unconventional angular design, stainless-steel exterior, and futuristic engineering concept. Elon Musk had initially projected annual sales of approximately 250,000 units, positioning the vehicle as a potential competitor in the American pickup truck market.
However, the vehicle struggled to achieve the commercial success initially anticipated. According to estimates from Kelley Blue Book cited by industry reports, Cybertruck sales declined by approximately 48 per cent between 2024 and 2025, recording further declines during the first nine months of 2026.
The vehicle additionally faced several manufacturing and quality-control challenges, including multiple recalls that affected consumer confidence. Despite its technological ambitions and considerable public attention, the Cybertruck struggled to establish itself as a mainstream electric pickup.
Future Outlook for Tesla’s Vehicle Lineup
Tesla's planned Cybertruck production wind-down reflects a broader transformation in the company's industrial priorities. Rather than concentrating exclusively on manufacturing conventional electric vehicles, Musk is increasingly positioning Tesla around autonomous driving, robotaxis, and humanoid robotics.
The company's Cybercab programme is expected to play an important role in its ambitions to develop autonomous transportation services. Nevertheless, the transition presents questions about the future of the Cybertruck, particularly for existing owners, prospective buyers, and the wider electric pickup market.
For now, the confirmed timeline points to a production wind-down around mid-2027. Whether the vehicle will disappear permanently or eventually return in another form remains uncertain.
