Opposition Convoy Attacked During Migori Political Tour
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and a delegation of opposition leaders were caught up in a violent incident in Migori County on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after suspected rowdy youths disrupted their political engagement and pelted their convoy with stones.
The incident occurred as the opposition delegation toured the Nyanza region as part of its political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to media reports, the group included former Attorney-General Justin Muturi, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyali Member of Parliament Mohamed Ali and former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju.
The incident reportedly involved stone-throwing and the use of tear gas by police, disrupting the political activities in Migori Town.
Kalonzo Speaks Out After the Attack
Following the incident, Kalonzo condemned the violence, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition leaders and interfere with their constitutional right to engage with Kenyans.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, the Wiper leader maintained that the incident would not derail the opposition's political activities.
He also alleged that the attack was coordinated, claiming that the group responsible had been instructed to target his convoy.
Kalonzo insisted that the opposition would continue with its planned engagements despite the disruption.
He subsequently proceeded with the opposition's political programme in Homa Bay County.
Justin Muturi Condemns Violence
Former Attorney-General Justin Muturi also condemned the incident, reporting that his vehicle had been vandalised during the disruption.
Muturi described the incident as an attack on democratic freedoms, arguing that political leaders should be allowed to address citizens without intimidation.
He maintained that violence should have no place in Kenya's political competition, particularly as political mobilisation intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections.
Linda Mwananchi Movement Demands Investigations
The Linda Mwananchi Movement has also condemned the attack, calling on security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, the movement's Head of Communications, Pauline Njoroge, expressed concern over growing political intolerance and the safety of opposition leaders.
The movement further cautioned against allowing isolated incidents of violence to create ethnic divisions or portray entire communities as hostile to particular political leaders.
It urged authorities to protect political freedoms and ensure that individuals responsible for acts of violence are held accountable.
Political Tensions Ahead of the 2027 General Election
The Migori incident comes amid increased political activity as opposition leaders intensify efforts to consolidate support across different regions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo's Nyanza tour has been part of his broader Ukombozi political mobilisation, during which he has invoked the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The opposition delegation has also criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration over governance, corruption and the cost of living.
The violence in Migori has consequently renewed concerns about political tolerance, freedom of assembly and the security of political leaders during public engagements.
Questions Raised Over Political Freedom and Public Safety
The incident has brought renewed attention to the responsibility of security agencies to protect citizens and political leaders exercising their constitutional freedoms.
Under Kenya's Constitution, citizens enjoy freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
As the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election, the response by relevant authorities and the outcome of investigations into the Migori incident will remain important in determining accountability.
For now, opposition leaders maintain that the disruption will not stop their political mobilisation across the country.
